Support for our Heroes | Q&A with Scott Goll

This holiday season we’ve followed our Paradigm Heroes Bill, Nancy, and Valerie on their road to recovery after various catastrophic injuries. Scott Goll, Senior Vice President of Operations at Paradigm Outcomes, joins us today to talk about he and the how the injury management team support our Heroes.

How long have you worked with Paradigm? What’s your role in supporting injured workers?

I have been with Paradigm for a little over 20 years. As the head of Operations, my principal role is to make certain that Paradigm’s business processes and clinical resources are adequately supported to make certain the injured worker we serve has the proper expert guidance to support his or her recovery.

What makes Paradigm’s approach to care management unique? In other words, how does Paradigm help injured workers achieve better than average outcomes?

Several primary factors come to mind. First is the injury management team which includes a physician with expertise in catastrophic injury, an experienced nurse case manager and a clinical director to lead the team. This group is assigned to each and every case Paradigm manages. Their job is to thoroughly understand the details of an injured worker’s case—the injury, their support system and other factors that may need to be addressed to support an optimal recovery. The nurse case manager has direct contact with the injured worker to make certain all the prescribed services are coordinated in a complete and timely fashion. Equally important is the Paradigm Medical Director who both guides the Paradigm team and collaborates with the treating physicians to understand and support the care plan.

Finally, Paradigm identifies and focuses on a specific outcome for each case. Instead of simply tracking progress, Paradigm starts with a targeted outcome that has been vetted through an onsite nurse case manager and physician communication with treating specialists. The actions necessary to achieve the defined outcome are a daily focus for the Paradigm team; it’s this persistent focus that separates us from conventional case management programs.

Tell me about Paradigm’s team approach. Why is it important to place the injured person at the center of a team of specialists?

The injured workers that Paradigm support have sustained serious, life altering injuries. We make certain that all necessary services are provided to the injured worker in a complete and timely fashion. If we focus on the injured worker and their family, we can achieve the best possible outcome and positively impact the injured worker’s level of function in the future.

How does Paradigm’s team work with treating providers?

Paradigm’s approach is first to make certain that the providers are the best suited to address the injured worker’s needs. Paradigm collaborates with the providers to understand the details of the injured worker’s condition through nurse case manager onsite visits and physician-to-physician communication. Next, we aggressively coordinate prescribed medical services and offer suggestions to the treating physician that may benefit the injured worker.

How does this approach help Paradigm’s clients?

The value to the client is quite straight forward. If we focus on the outcome and the actions necessary to achieved an optimal recovery, we will maximize the level of function, improve medical stability, lower the need for personal care services, foster greater well-being and increase the possibility for returning to work. Ultimately, this leads to lower overall lifetime medical costs.
