Paradigm’s Chief Medical Officer to Testify Before California Senate

SACRAMENTO, CA – January 12, 2010 – Paradigm Management Services’ Chief Medical Officer and founder, Nathan Cope, M.D., will provide expert testimony to the California State Senate Health Committee tomorrow on new approaches in the care and treatment of persons with brain injury.  Dr. Cope will present Paradigm’s Systematic Care ManagementSM methodology as a model for improved medical outcomes, greater functional benefits and lower costs than the current system.

“A full array of acute care and rehabilitation makes a pronounced difference in the health and function of an injured person,” said Dr. Cope.  “Augmenting this care with overarching coordination from a specialized management structure optimizes these results.  The cost savings that follow the improved medical outcomes are equally important to the discussion and offer significant economic cost savings to society.”

Supporting Dr. Cope’s position are the groundbreaking results from a workers’ compensation study performed by one of the nation’s largest actuarial and consulting firms, Milliman, Inc., demonstrating that Paradigm outperformed comparable cases in Milliman’s database in getting patients released to return to work (5x better), returned to work (5x better), and returned to work in full-duty (13x better).

Also appearing before the committee tomorrow are journalist Bob Woodruff, an epidemiologist from the University of California, Los Angeles, an insurance industry representative and a provider association representative.

In addition to his appearance before the state, Dr. Cope has also contributed written testimony to the U.S. Congress outlining Paradigm’s methodology and industry leading outcomes.  The position paper depicts a successful model, proven by nearly 20 years of commercial experience, for the comprehensive treatment of complex injuries.

Dr. Cope is a nationally recognized physiatrist and psychiatrist specializing in catastrophic head and spinal cord injury treatment, and performing and publishing seminal research on treatment and outcomes.  Prior to starting Paradigm in 1991, Dr. Cope held senior medical and management positions at some of the nation’s leading hospitals, including Stanford University Medical Center and the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, D.C.  He has lectured throughout the world on catastrophic head and spinal cord injury, and managing catastrophic care.
