Raising Awareness for Limb Loss and Limb Difference in April

To recognize and support the millions of Americans living with limb loss, the Amputee Coalition of America started Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month in 2010. Held each April, the event honors this community and educates the public on this important topic. The theme for 2021 is “Moments that Matter.” For people with limb loss, these moments can encompass numerous milestones, including surgery, rehabilitation, or learning to use a prosthetic limb.

As the leader in achieving life-changing outcomes for catastrophically injured individuals, Paradigm has extensive care management experience, proprietary data, and expertise in the area of limb loss. To support the high level of catastrophic care management required for these cases, we are committed to building clinical partnerships with leading organizations in this field.

For April, we’re sharing information on our relationship with the Limb Loss and Preservation Registry (LLPR) and our ongoing work with this worthy organization.

Optimizing outcomes for workers’ compensation limb loss cases
The LLPR is funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense in response to growing needs around limb loss care and outcomes data. In addition to military-related injuries, there has also been an increase in amputations due to medical conditions like diabetes and vascular disease. The goal of their five-year initiative, which is managed by the Mayo Clinic, is to create a comprehensive data repository for limb loss and preservation care. This includes clinical data, surgical procedures, prosthetic devices and components, therapy interventions, functional outcomes, and quality-of-life concerns.

Due to our many years of experience in catastrophic care management, Paradigm is proud to actively contribute to the LLPR, joining a team that includes hospitals, post-acute care providers, and prosthetic manufacturers. Paradigm’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Michael Choo, is a founding member of a panel formed to support and guide the Mayo Clinic team and principal investigator Kenton Kaufman, PhD, in implementing the LLPR.

We believe this initiative is extremely valuable because it centralizes evidence-based insights, and provides real-time observational outcomes research. Widespread access to this knowledge facilitates industry education and decreases care variance. The end result is to help individuals with limb loss achieve the best possible functional outcomes and maximize their quality of life.
