Burn Injury
A burn occurs when your skin and tissues are damaged from either chemicals, flames, liquids, steam or electricity. Complex burns usually affect more than just the skin. Burns can shut down or weaken vital systems, putting their victims at great risk for multiple complications. Depending on how extensive the area of burn is and how deeply the burns penetrate the skin’s layers (sometimes reaching into muscle tissue), virtually every system in the body may be affected by burn injury. Initially severe burns require intensive dressing procedures and many precautions against complications such as infection.
There are many challenges to treating this complex medical condition that can cause delays in recovery. Depending on the severity of the burn, skin grafts to cover the burned area may be needed to help the tissue heal and encourage new skin growth. Skin grafts may be performed in multiple stages, necessitating frequent trips to the operating room for the best results. Management of pain and the scar tissue continues well past the initial phase of injury and into recovery to obtain the most function possible.
